(lilac island – by the lilac trellises): Angra do Hero\u00edsmo is the largest city in Terceira with a population of over 10,000 inhabitants. From the reign of King Jo\u00e3o III, it played a fundamental role in serving as an Atlantic stopover for the \u201cCarreira das \u00cdndias\u201d. This economic and urban development resulted in a very important historic centre, which has been classified as a World Heritage Site. Located near the city of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo, Monte Brasil is an extinct volcano, fortified by the Fort of S. Jo\u00e3o, built by the Spanish during the Filipes dynasty. At the top, we can visit the Monte Brasil Recreio Forest Reserve.<\/p>

The Laginha Viewpoint offers an excellent view of the Cabras islets. Ponta das Contendas is considered a sanctuary for the island’s indigenous fauna and flora and is located on the southeastern end of the island. Nearby we can visit the Farol das Contendas and the ruins of a military fortress from the 15th and 16th centuries. Praia da Vit\u00f3ria, the second largest city in Terceira. It is located at the eastern end of the island. As points of interest to visit we have the Beach, the Marina, the Igreja Matriz, the birthplace of the writer Vitorino Nem\u00e9sio and at the top of Serra do Facho, the Miradouro do Facho, which offers a very pleasant view over the city and the bay. <\/p>

The Serra do Cume Viewpoint, through the suspended platform, you can see an extensive plain, where the agricultural properties are divided by walls of volcanic stone creating a landscape known as \u201cpatchwork\u201d. The Algar do Carv\u00e3o, a volcanic chimney, which is not blocked due to the drainage of the magma that has retreated into the magma chamber. It is classified as a Natural Monument. Just 1 km from Algar do Carv\u00e3o are the Furnas de Enxofre, which have several volcanic gas outlets at temperatures that can reach almost 100\u00baC at the surface. Lagoa do Negro, close to the Santa B\u00e1rbara Forest Reserve, small lake. Next to the lagoon is the Gruta do Natal, which contains tubes of lava flow from the old eruptions of the Santa B\u00e1rbara volcano. Island known gastronomically for the meat rump, cooked in clay terrines in the lard oven.
